Vegetation surveys using the belt transect method were completed in all three fields. Each transect line contained 8 circular one-meter diameter sampling stations. For each of the three fields a transect line was established from east to west in approximately the same location as those used in the 2011 surveys. Vegetation types were estimated and recorded for each station by percentages.
The results of the May 28 survey show that greater than 60% of the samples had no vegetation (open soil) and only field #1 contained the woody vegetation Multiflora Rose at approximately 4%. However, in areas outside the transect stations, woody vegetation including Bittersweet, Blackberry, Multiflora Rose and Virginia Creeper was noted in small amounts. In terms of invasive plants, the sampling stations recorded Canada Thistle in field #1 and Mile-a-Minute (MAM) in Field #3. Outside the transect line these two invasive plants were present in all three fields. Dense patches of Mile-a-Minute occurred in the east end of fields 2 and 3. The appearance of rye may be attributed to the winter crop planted in 2011.
